One year after the publication of our original report, we are proud to make Beneath the Surface available in German. Made possible by the work of dedicated volunteers, the German edition brings our analysis to a wider audience and, we hope, will contribute to a more informed debate across Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
One year ago, we launched Beneath the Surface: How gender identity is reshaping Europe, our first major report mapping how gender identity has been embedded in European law, policy and institutions.
The report traces developments across the European Union and the Council of Europe and examines how changes in language and policy have affected sex-based rights, the safeguarding of children and adolescents, data and statistics, freedom of expression and democratic accountability.
Today, we are very proud to publish the report in German.
This German edition exists thanks to the commitment and considerable work of volunteers who translated and reviewed the report. We are enormously grateful to everyone who gave their time and expertise to make it possible.
Many of the developments documented in Beneath the Surface are European in origin but have very concrete consequences at national level. Questions around self-ID, the meaning of sex in law, medical approaches to children and adolescents, freedom of expression and the collection of sex-based data are part of political and public debate across the German-speaking countries.
We therefore hope that the German edition will provide a useful resource for policymakers, journalists, researchers, professionals, advocates and interested members of the public, and contribute to open and better-informed discussions across Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
