In this webinar with Women’s Declaration International’s Feminist Question Time, Athena Forum Director Faika El-Nagashi explains the significance of three recent developments at the EU and Council of Europe level: the launch of the European Commission’s LGBTQI+ Strategy 2026–30, the resolution calling for a ban on “conversion practices” adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in January 2026, and the inclusion of a paragraph recommending that the category of sex be disregarded in the definition of women in the European Parliament’s recommendation to the Council for the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW).
While these three developments share certain characteristics, they also differ in important ways. Faika breaks down the details and reflects on the challenges posed by the lack of understanding of these issues, not only among journalists but also among political representatives responsible for scrutinising such proposals on behalf of citizens.
